Fresh off the heels of the recent release of their new EP "Dirty Filthy", Atomic Drop are keeping busy and pounding out the tunes. With shows coming up from Peru to Greece and a plethora of remixes and originals in the works, AD managed to set aside a few moments and answer the Kick It 12 for us. Head on over to Beatport when you’re done and check out the nearly twenty dancefloor rockers they have already released.
The Kick It 12 - Atomic Drop Edition
1. – At what age did you first find yourself gravitating towards Electronic music and who were some of the artists outside of Electronic music that influenced that?
Cameron: We all got into Electronic music in our teens. Before that we all played in Rock and Metal bands... influenced by the sounds of bands like Sepultura, Chilli Peppers, NIN, Skinny Puppy and GnR. We came to Electronica via Raves, so I think we were always into a wide variety of styles, from Drum & Bass and Hip Hop to Techno and Acid House.
2. – What was your very first Album? How about CD?
Cameron: "Great Balls of Fire" was the first cassette tape I bought. My first CD was a Sepultura album.
3. – How did you first get involved with the Electronic music culture and what was the first event that you attended?
Cameron: We got involved by going to Raves and parties...the one that stands out was the Warp! Experience at the old Drome AKA SE1 in the late 90's. We eventually got involved with putting on parties and events after meeting at the Warp! and fast forward 10 years and we're pooling our talents and resources into Atomic Drop.
4. – Where was your favorite gig that you have had to date?
Cameron: Elecrtic Circus at the Scala. Epic event and we rocked it playing a 3 man live set. It was a themed night "Lunatics take over the asylum", so there was a really fun vibe, with great costumes, sexy pole dancers, cabaret and acrobatics....we are looking forward to the next one.
5. - Who have you been most proud to play alongside?
Cameron: We've had the good fortune to play alongside some of our favorite artists: Underworld, Booka Shade, Sub Focus, Utah Saints, Faithless, Tinnie Tempah, Finlay Quaye, Adam Freeland, Dirty Loud, Hybrid, The Rogue Element, Far Too Loud, Elite Force, General Midi, Miles Dyson, Tim Healey and Tom Real.
6. - Where would you most like to play that you have not yet?
Cameron: I think Canada probably next on the list. They have a great scene and love EDM.
7. - What is your favorite tune you have released?
Cameron: R U Red E out on Bazooka Records soon is my fave so far, although we have some really fat unreleased stuff that is even better! Keep your eyes peeled.
8. - Who is your favorite EDM artist? How about outside of EDM?
Cameron: I keep saying it..Dada Life are smashing it these days. Outside of EDM its probably the music of Maynard James Keenan and his bands Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
9. - Who are some artists you would like to collaborate with in the future?
Cameron: Dada Life obvioulsy! and I'd love to get in the studio with Skrillex and Noisia to see how the hell they get the sounds so big.
10. - What is your preferred software for producing? Hardware?
Cameron: Ableton Live, Cubase 5, Studio One, Logic, NI.Massive.
Since there are 3 of us we have got every DAW package and we like to use all of them.
Hardware wise we use the SH101 a fair bit.
11. - What life lessons has the music industry taught you?
Cameron: To work hard and have the right attitude for success. The EDM industry is constantly in a state of flux and being able to ride different waves and different styles is vital for longevity. Its important not to pigeon hole yourself ino one style.
12. – What does the future hold for “Atomic Drop”
Cameron: New releases out soon on Bazooka Records, some remixs for Broken records, collaboration and music video with Tim Healey, singles planned on Massive Music, lots of summer gigs including The Arcadia Stage at Glastonbury, The Mad Hatters Ball with Miles Dyson and the Broken crew.
